We have put together the things you need to consider when writing website content for your site. Keep in mind it can take some time to learn to language of article writing, especially because writing articles for sites may differ from articles you’ve previously written.

However, by following the tips below, you can build on your existing skills and write engaging content in less time and with less stress.

1. Write short paragraphs

Writing content online is different from everything you’ve been told about writing. This is because people read differently online than they do with other forms of print like books and newspapers.

When was the last time you read an article, word for word, start to finish? Exactly. It’s not something people generally do when reading website content.

My advice is to write short paragraphs – no longer than a sentence or two. This will allow people to skim through your article and take in a lot more information.

It may also mean they stay on your site for longer – a great message for search engines!

2. Make sure you deliver on your title

The worst thing you can do is get visitors to your site with a great title and then turn them away with content that simply doesn’t deliver.

This behavior will be picked up by search engines which will result in your content being pushed back in search engine results.

When people search for something, they are often looking for an answer. Deliver on whatever promise you make to ensure you provide the relevant information visitors are looking for

3. Regularly updated content

Outdated content will not only make your site look bad, but it will turn visitors away.

Make sure that you regularly update your content so that it stays current and keeps visitors coming back for more.

4. It’s not about you

Remember that you are not writing for you, you are writing for your audience. This can be really hard for writers to get their head around, but once you put yourself in the shoes of your audience, you’ll see where the gaps in your content lie.

Assume no knowledge and make sure you understand the audience you are writing for so that it meets their level.

5. Don’t forget a call to action

Often the only way to get someone to take action is to ask them to do it. This is what we use a call to action for.

By simply stating “Download your free checklist now” you’ll increase conversions.
