The benefits of selling online courses

The biggest benefit is what I list above – that once you have it all set up, it can be a good passive way to earn money.  There are also other benefits.

A course is a great idea because it can literally be about anything. For example, David writes about making money from surveys as this is his hobby. He has since had success turning this into a mini course on how to do this successfully to make the big bucks.

People usually pay for courses upfront. This means that they can offer a good cash injection, especially as you don’t need to have all the course ready up front.

There are also many side benefits to courses besides income. It can set you up to be seen as a leader in your field, for example, and may help you get speaking gigs.

The negatives of selling online courses

The biggest negative is that there is a steep learning curve. You need to work out how to create your courses and manage them online. The technical side can be overwhelming. Although there are sites like Open Learning that can make it easier for you.

You also need to get people to buy your courses. This usually entails needing to learn how to create a sales funnel. There is also getting the right people to the funnel in the first place.

How to get started

The first step to getting started is working out what your course will be about. Do not get overwhelmed by this step. The fact is that you don’t need to be a total expert in an area, you just have to know what you are doing better than the people you are selling the course to. In fact, it can often be a bonus if you are not an expert as you can understand the challenges better faced by people just starting out. Once you  have the course topic, you need to create a landing page and get people to sign up. Only once you have people interested, should you start creating the course.

Starting a course is not for the faint hearted but it is a great way to grow an online business.
